4. Charging station architecture and operation

4.1 The four charging modes

Beyond the distinction between AC and DC recharging, four recharging modes are defined, depending on the type of control performed during recharging: these are the recharging modes (not to be confused with socket types), defined by the IEC 61851-1 standard .

Modes 1, 2 and 3 cover AC charging, while mode 4 covers DC charging (see figure
