4. Different types of simulators

4.1 Real time and deferred time

A distinction is generally made between study simulators and real-time simulators. Study simulators have no reason to run in real time, and are generally used for planning and management studies, or for designing new equipment, settings or automation. These study simulators can sometimes be run faster than real time, the aim being to obtain the most accurate result possible in the shortest possible time.

The need for real-time simulation of power systems arises mainly for two major classes of simulators:

  • simulators for training dispatchers in operation (and, by the same token, simulators for testing new functions to be implemented in a dispatching center);
