5. Generator coupling
The power demand of a plant, or the significant variation in that power, can make it necessary to set up several generators in parallel. This means that a number of gensets can be brought into production in line with the power demand, avoiding the risk of running a genset at too low a power level. A generator must not operate at less than 30% of its rated power for extended periods. A maximum consecutive duration of 30 minutes is normally accepted.
5.1 Coupling methods
To connect a generator to a network or another generator, the following conditions must be met:
voltage equality ;
equal frequencies ;
phase matching.
