5. Choice of number of bits

Phase and amplitude control is usually achieved using binary control cells. For each command, the number b of bits is defined by the total variation range Δ and the smallest step p : $b = {log}_{2} (\frac{Δ + p}{p})$

the highest value reached being Δ :

$Δ = p \sum_{i = 1}^{b} 2^{i - 1} = p (2^{b} - 1)$
