2. Deterministic signals

To characterize observed phenomena, or to study the behavior of processing systems, it is often necessary to use reference sequences or standard signals. This should come as no surprise, since it's also what we do in the continuous-time domain. For example, harmonic analysis of a (linear) system involves characterizing it by applying sinusoids at the input and measuring the amplitude and phase of the sinusoid at the output; similarly, observing a signal over a time interval of finite duration involves multiplying it by a rectangular function which is 1 over the interval and 0 otherwise; a linear filter is characterized by its response to a unit pulse or unit step, etc., and so on.
