1. Digital signals

1.1 From continuous to discrete time

When the value of the signal can be calculated at any instant t by an explicit function, by a differential or recurrent equation, or by any other form of mathematical expression, the signal is said to be deterministic. In what follows, we restrict ourselves to this type of signal. When it is not possible to provide such a description of the evolution of the observed physical quantity, as in the case of background noise in electronic devices, or the signal produced by speech at the output of a microphone, we speak of random signals.
