3. M2M/IoT traffic growth and virtualization

With the growth in M2M and IoT traffic, communication network operators have identified the need for greater flexibility in the network, to deploy new functions faster, but also more automation to reduce operating costs. Virtualization and all-IP quickly emerged as key technologies for M2M and IoT communications infrastructure.

3.1 The benefits of virtualization for M2M

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) aims to replace proprietary telecom systems with Linux servers, a virtualization layer and software. The hardware is typically grouped together in a data center, forming a cloud of virtualized server, storage and network resources.
