4. Challenges associated with using the DVB standard for satellite Internet access

This chapter presents the main optimization issues associated with the definition of an Internet access system based on the DVB standard and the elements associated with what is defined by the standard: optimization elements that are not presented, such as protocol enhancements above the network layer or network architecture, are not detailed.

4.1 Determining optimal modulation and coding

The first generation of DVB-S was designed for the worst-case scenario: the terminal at the extremities of the coverage with the maximum distance to the satellite and the worst weather conditions defined the modulation and coding for all terminals.
