It is now generally accepted that the radio technologies (RATs) needed for "modern telematics", or the "Internet of Things", cannot be limited to just one or two. A wide range is required, from simple RFID to 5G microwave, depending on the applications to be covered. SigFox's optimization zone lies between RFID and cellular IoT (NB-IoT, Cat-M...). At the lower end of its application spectrum, we can even speak of "long-distance RFID": very simple to deliver, very low-energy, mostly monodirectional (uplink) information, but without the distance limitation of RFID. Exchanges range from a few bits to a few bytes per day. More "complex" applications can involve exchanges of up to a few kilobytes per day, with a few daily "remote controls" or "information descents" to the objects.
