As a pioneering IoT operator, SigFox also pioneered UNB technology for sporadic data transmission. This technology is indeed an ideal candidate for applications requiring small, punctual data transmission with very low energy consumption. Indeed, as detailed in this article, the PHY and MAC layers are defined to be as efficient as possible in terms of spectral occupancy, power consumption vs. range achieved, and access protocol, while guaranteeing good performance thanks to the various redundancy mechanisms exploited.

These good performances have inspired other systems, such as those from Weightless, Telensa, and even for 5G with its NB-IoT part.

UNB is a technology with a bright future ahead of it.
