5. Conclusion

JPEG 2000 has the potential to take digital imaging one step further, especially thanks to its flexibility of use and intrinsic scalability.

But JPEG's strong foothold in digital photography, followed by its variants JPEG-LS and JPEG XR, hindered its development in the consumer and even professional fields.

Part 1 of the standard is free of all patent rights, but support for software and hardware has been slow in coming.

The adoption of JPEG 2000 for digital cinema film distribution in mid-2005 was therefore a decisive step in its development and adoption in other professional applications. The early 2010s saw software publishers and server manufacturers integrate it into their offerings, enabling fields such as digital archiving and contribution transmission to adopt it more widely.
