3.1 Scientific background and hypotheses

Neurological disorders are a major cause of long-term functional disability, with considerable human, economic and social implications. They can have varying impacts on the different fields of cognition, i.e. high-level information processing functions such as attention, communication, memory and executive functions. They result in cognitive dysfunction characterized by functioning below expected normative levels, or loss of capacity in any area of the cognitive field.

Cognitive rehabilitation is defined as the process of increasing or improving an individual's ability to process and use incoming information to enable improved functioning in activities of daily living.
