3. Java and security

Java programs are designed to be downloaded over the network, which implies security aspects. No one would dare execute downloaded code whose actual content he or she did not know, if he or she did not have information about the code's safety. Security is assured at several levels, and mainly concerns applets.

3.1 Language restrictions

The first level of security is that of the language itself. Java has replaced pointers with references. There is no reference arithmetic in Java similar to the pointer arithmetic of C or C++. It is therefore impossible for the programmer to manipulate memory addresses to access unauthorized areas.
