5. REQUIEM for SOAP
An extract from this chapter, taken from the first version of this article, is kept as a reminder, as the use of SOAP has been discouraged, or even abandoned, by most of the major Internet service providers (Google in December 2006, Amazon in 2015...).
SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a mechanism for exchanging XML messages between applications, mainly using the HTTP protocol. SOAP was originally developed to penetrate firewalls via HTTP, which block RPC (Remote Procedure Call) calls from DCOM or IIOP.
SOAP-RPC does not respect the SOA style, since it is a means of conveying application-specific RPC interfaces in a standard pipe. It requires a detailed knowledge of how each application works in order to use it. It therefore does not satisfy the n o ...
