10. RSVP (Reservation Protocol )
The Internet community would like to see the network evolve towards multimedia applications. In this case, the Internet network will have to support isochronous applications, or at least applications with a defined quality of service. The necessary synchronization or quality of service can only be achieved by adding new protocols for resource reservation.
Several solutions have emerged, and there seem to be two main schools of thought on the use of the new mechanisms developed by the IETF.
The first view, held by the classic Internet community, maintains the position that only "best effort" service is of interest, and that sources and routers must adapt to try and move as much traffic as possible. Optics is still a network of networks, and each network is expected to do its best. End-to-end QoS is achieved by optimizing the QoS of sub-networks....
