Search engines punctuate the digital lives of today's Internet users. Essential crossroads for any investigation on the Web, they have evolved considerably from the first tools (Excite, Webcrawler, Lycos, Altavista, etc.) to the current leader, Google, and its challenger, Bing, which very few competitors are currently able to match. In any case, it's worth taking a closer look at how these tools work and how they've evolved over the years, as knowledge of what we can find "under the hood of the engines" can also help us to better carry out our Web searches...
