5.1 Batch/continuous comparison

Cold-wall layer crystallization systems are flexible, enabling different products to be purified in batch mode. On the other hand, suspension crystallization (continuous) is less flexible, as the adjustment of parameters (withdrawal rates for different fractions, temperature, etc.) is more delicate and highly dependent on the product being purified. An industrial suspension crystallization plant is generally dedicated to the purification of a single product.

Suspension crystallization offers a larger liquid/solid exchange surface than the cold-wall layer process. As a result, material transfer kinetics are higher, enabling higher productivity.
