4. Main uses and outlook
4.1 Aerosol propellants
The remarkable properties of CFCs (non-toxic, non-flammable, etc.) had led to their use as aerosol propellants (hair sprays, etc.).
In this application, CFCs have been replaced by certain HFCs, such as R134a and R152a, alone or in blends. They are also often replaced by hydrocarbons or dimethyl ether, which have the disadvantage of flammability, but the advantage of lower cost.
