1. A few definitions

A distinction is made between alopecia and baldness. The etymological origin of the word alopecia is Greek. It refers to the fox (αλωπεκη, fox skin), an animal that sheds its hair in springtime. Alopecia is therefore partial or total hair loss. Baldness, on the other hand, is the ultimate stage of androgenetic alopecia, a particular form of alopecia that will be detailed later.

Historical background

If hair is still so important in today's society, it's because it's associated, in our collective unconscious, with notions of strength and seduction. To convince ourselves of this, we can go back in time and recall the story of Samson and Delilah told in the Bible, in the Book of Judges.
