4. Equilibria between phases of a pure body

  • Phase equations of state

    Experience shows that a single-phase pure body can be represented by a uniform closed system with two degrees of freedom. This means that it is sufficient to fix the value of two arbitrary intensive state quantities to impose the thermodynamic state of the system.

    As a result :

    • if we take any three intensive properties (x, y, z), there's bound to be a relationship between them, called the equation of state :

      f (x, y, z ) = 0

    • any Z m (i.e. intensive) molar property can be represented by a function of T and p, or :
