The spectroscopic properties of the atoms, molecules and particles present in the atmosphere determine the lidar signals and hence the size of the instruments and the methods to be used. The various light-matter interaction processes involved in lidar measurements are :

  • Rayleigh-Cabannes" or simply "Rayleigh" elastic scattering by molecules and atoms
