The increase in fiber laser power relies crucially on optical and fiber components capable of withstanding powers of several kilowatts, in both continuous-wave and pulsed modes.
Unlike components from the telecommunications sector, which are optimized for powers below one watt, those used in high-power applications must combine low insertion loss—to limit heating—with thermal and mechanical robustness, often incorporating cooling and resistance to optical flux, both in the core and the cladding. They constitute the fundamental building blocks of any fiber laser architecture.
