3.1 Translation matrix
When light passes through a homogeneous, isotropic medium, the optical index n of the medium remains constant (for all positions and directions in space, and for all states of light polarization). According to Descartes' law (Box 2), the orientation of the ray with respect to the optical axis remains constant, and the light ray travels in a straight line (figure 8 ).
