6. Supplementary setting for hydraulic and pozzolanic binders

6.1 Blast furnace slag activation

Blast furnace slag is a by-product of ironmaking. They are made up of iron ore and coke impurities, added fluxes and refractory wear products. They are calcium and magnesium silico-aluminates which, when rapidly cooled, retain their vitreous state, making them reactive in the same way as clinker, the main component of cement.

Vitrified slag is therefore a hydraulic binder which, when an activator such as lime (5 to 10% quicklime equivalent) is added, is capable of initiating setting and developing mechanical resistance. Lime's role is to raise the pH and initiate the solubilization of reactive slag components, followed by their crystallization.
