1. Origin, formation and classification

The term "coalshale" is associated with coal mining. It is commonly understood as the by-product resulting from the separation of coal from the waste rock that inevitably accompanies its extraction in the mine.

Waste rock is therefore coal shale, and can include materials of different natures, notably sandstone interlayers.

Nota

The term "shale" is in fact a misnomer, because in the petrographic sense, shale refers to any geological formation affected by tectonics that has produced schistosity in the material.
