2.1 Experimental observations

Laboratory studies of soils show highly non-linear behavior under mechanical stress.

Conventional soil mechanics tests under monotonic loading enable us to plot shear stress-strain (or distortion) curves and define the different soil behavior domains (figure 9 ).
