1. Definitions specific to shallow foundations

1.1 Normative context

Within the Eurocodes body of standards, several refer to shallow foundations and their dimensioning.

Eurocode 7 (NF EN 1997-1) covers the design of geotechnical structures. In this context, NF P 94-261 is the application standard for shallow foundations. It should also be noted that NF P 94-281 deals with weight retaining walls, and includes a section devoted to surface foundations in this more specific case.

Eurocode 8 deals with the design of structures for their resistance to earthquakes, and in particular Part 5 (NF EN 1998-5) which, among other things, deals with shallow foundations under seismic loads.

These documents have replaced the older DTU13.12 for superficial foundations of buildings...
