1. Welding basics

1.1 Main welding processes

There are many welding processes, which can be classified according to the type of energy used and whether it is in a solid or liquid state (FD ISO/TR 25901-3 standard).

The choice of process depends mainly on the thickness of the parts to be welded, the composition of the material, the specifications (required mechanical performance, safety recommendations), the location, access, welding position, desired yield, etc.

We are particularly interested in processes involving filler metal, especially arc welding with coated electrodes, submerged arc welding, TIG, MIG/MAG, and laser beam welding. These techniques lead to similar fatigue behavior.
