Overview

ABSTRACT

Fatigue consists in studying the behavior of materials under cyclic loading and in determining their resistance. The objective of this article is to present the main test methods that have been developed, either to compare materials and manufacturing processes, or to obtain the data requested to predict the life of components subject to cyclic loading. This article begins to expose the definitions related to fatigue tests. Then it focuses on the description of the different methods used to determine the fatigue strength of materials or structures.

 INTRODUCTION

The aim of the articles Fatigue testing [M 4 170] and [M 4 171] is to present the main fatigue test methods that can be used to compare materials and manufacturing processes, or to obtain the data needed to predict fatigue life.

This first article describes the general aspects of the fatigue field, enabling us to classify the various fatigue tests, as well as the existing loadings. It briefly reviews the precautions to be taken in terms of calibration (static and dynamic) and alignment.

Endurance initiation resistance is then described in detail. Guidelines are given, in line with current standards, on the choice of fatigue specimens, test and skinning methods (staircase method, Locati method, iteration method, Henry's line plot), and diagrams for presenting the results obtained (Wöhler diagram, Haigh diagram, etc.).

A rapid method for determining fatigue strength using temperature measurements (self-heating) is also discussed.

At the end of the article, typical examples of fatigue fracture facies provide an initial classification of initiation sites and their particularities.

The rigorous application of these methods, in conjunction with the latest standards, enables us to take full account of the effect of the many parameters that affect the behavior of materials and mechanical components when subjected to cyclic loading.

At the end of the article, readers will find a glossary and a table of the notations used.
