5. Main areas of use

Once considered expensive because of their purchase value, titanium and its alloys are increasingly considered economical in terms of operating costs. The key to their cost-effectiveness is to make maximum use of their unique properties and characteristics right from the design stage, rather than substituting them ex abrupto for another metal.

The example in table 18 , taken from the offshore oil industry, shows that installation and operating costs for titanium drill pipes are 16%, even 200%, lower than with the steel reference:

  • Corrosion resistance eliminates the need to coat tubes, resulting in a service life three to five times longer than that of steel;
