5. Surface treatments

After inspection finishing, castings can undergo surface treatments, often requested by customers to protect them from oxidation, or to improve their appearance or mechanical characteristics (shot-blasting, roller burnishing, etc.).

5.1 Ferrous products

In most cases, this will be a coat of paint, or primer, designed to prevent the parts from rusting during storage and transportation. In the case of certain parts, such as motor vehicle crankcases, the parts are painted using paints with very strict specifications, which means they don't have to be repainted before being mounted on the vehicle.
