Overview

ABSTRACT

Impurity retention when casting alloys is of great concern to casters in the ongoing research into the quality of molded parts. This retention can be achieved through filtration, using various filters and implementations. There are also some newer filtration devices, such as carousels and filter boxes used in casting systems for refractory ceramics intended for large steel parts and other top-casting devices through filter sleeves.

 INTRODUCTION

This dossier deals with the retention of impurities by filtration of sand castings. It covers the various filters available on the market and those most frequently encountered in the industry, the practical recommendations necessary for their implementation, and the calculation method we recommend for in-mold filtration etching systems.

An example of an industrial application illustrates this method.

An important chapter is devoted to filtration-related improvements in casting quality for the main alloy families, as well as to more recent filtration devices such as the carousels and filter boxes used in refractory pottery casting systems for large steel parts [M 3 629] and other devices for direct casting through filter sleeves.

A table of notations, abbreviations and symbols can be found at the end of the file.
