    In thick lubrication, with a lubricant thickness in the micrometer range, friction solely depends on pressure and contact temperature; the degradation processes of the tool are reduced to the minimum. For Newtonian lubricants, formula are provided in order to assess the thickness of the lubricating film and describe its morphology in several applications. This article finally explains how the former theories have been extended to lubricants presenting a more complex rheology such as non-Newtonian fluids.

     INTRODUCTION

    In this issue, we continue our presentation of lubrication problems in forming processes. In the first two parts, we presented the general principles of lubrication, followed by the rules to be observed when choosing the right lubricant for the right process, and finally the means of testing, which is essential for determining the performance of a lubricant in terms of friction and tool wear. In this section, we analyze the lubrication regime using thick films (micrometer thickness) formed from :

    • cold, thanks to the viscosity of liquid lubricants and the consistency of solid lubricants (metal soaps, metal coatings);

    • hot viscosity of metallic glass coatings.
