9. Security

The most common hazards encountered in magnesium alloy foundry work are fire hazards. These risks are greatest during the melting and casting of parts, as magnesium alloys in massive form only ignite if they are brought to a temperature above their melting point.

During deburring and machining operations, we avoid heating the workpiece through friction by using tools adapted to working with magnesium.

9.1 Instructions in the event of a magnesium fire

  • Never use water or products containing water. The hydrogen released by decomposing water recombines explosively with oxygen in the air, helping to spread the fire.
