 INTRODUCTION

Hexavalent chromium-based conversion coatings have been used for over 60 years for their excellent anti-corrosion properties, particularly for galvanized steel systems, and also for their excellent paint adhesion.

However, for reasons of environmental and human protection, these treatments are set to disappear. More or less interesting substitutes are emerging, but are still at the laboratory research stage, while others, such as trivalent chromium, are now being industrialized. These multiple avenues are in full development and will enable hexavalent chromium to be replaced in the next few years.
