1. Hot-dip galvanizing of finished parts

1.1 General presentation

Anti-corrosion protection of iron with a layer of zinc obtained by immersion in a bath of molten metal first appeared towards the end of the 18th century. Prior to the introduction of the term "galvanization" by Stanislas Sorel in his patents filed with his partner Hector Ledru in 1837, the process was referred to as "zinc tinning". The term galvanization refers to the discoveries of Galvani, whose name is associated with the action of an electric current. Sorel was inspired by Davy's observations that in the Volta battery, made up of zinc and copper electrodes, one was always protected. Sorel proposed this principle for the "conservation" of iron by zinc.
