 INTRODUCTION

The quest to optimize the match between mechanical stresses, such as tribological stress (wear, friction, etc.), or physico-chemical stresses, such as oxidation, and material properties naturally leads to the development of structures with functional gradients. The corollary is the notion of surface treatments. Today, the range of techniques available for such treatments is vast, and their relevance depends on both technical and economic specifications. Techniques based on the use of a laser beam occupy a special and privileged place, if only because the range of treatments that can be envisaged or are already in industrial production is so broad.

From the source (with its industrial reliability) to the product, via transport, beam shaping and related techniques, this document aims to show the great potential of laser techniques.
