Overview

ABSTRACT

This article describes the most widely used worldwide processes to convert cast iron into steel, together with the raw materials introduced into the converters, from the loading of steel into the furnace to the various additions necessary to obtain quality steel production. The history of these techniques from their origins helps gain a better understanding of the advances in the various technologies presented. Theoretical aspects concerning the refining reactions and the refining processes are then presented.

 INTRODUCTION

Steel mills for converting cast iron into steel are studied and described in this article, as well as in [M 7 651] .

In this article, we begin by describing the conversion processes most commonly used around the world, as well as the raw materials fed into converters, from iron-bearing furnaces to the various additions required to ensure quality steel production.

A history of the development of these techniques since their origins gives the reader a better understanding of the progress of the various technologies presented.

We then turn to the theoretical aspects of refining reactions and processes.

Readers will also find in the documentation section the evolution of annual crude steel production worldwide and in China, as well as the share of the various production processes.

Operating practices, equipment and other information concerning the design and construction of conversion steel mills are covered in article [M 7 651] .
