4. Solid molybdenum production

Almost all solid molybdenum is obtained by powder metallurgy; the remainder, around 5-10%, is electrofused in an arc furnace with consumable electrodes or electron bombardment.

4.1 Sintering technology

The sintering technique is available in three variants, depending on the mass of the part and its intended use.

The pressing of small parts, on automatic presses, uses agglomerated powder granules to facilitate flow to the mold and control its feed. Granulation is achieved by spraying a mixture of molybdenum powder, suspended in a solvent containing an organic binder in solution, into a vertical hot chamber. The solvent evaporates during spraying, and the organic binder agglomerates the powder particles.
