1.1 Definition
Electroplating or electrophoretic painting involves coating a metal part with a film-forming organic coating under the combined effect of an electric field and water electrolysis reactions: a DC voltage is applied between the part to be painted and a counter-electrode, both of which are immersed in the paint.
The polymer, which makes up the paint, must therefore be electrically charged in order to migrate under the effect of the electric field and be deposited on the electrode under the effect of the electrochemical reactions of water decomposition (see mechanisms §
