7. Cavernous corrosion

Crevice corrosion is undoubtedly the limiting factor for titanium. Where the integrity of the oxide film is not assured, corrosion will develop. This phenomenon is typical of nooks and crannies where the medium is stagnant and therefore not renewed: fasteners, joints, flanges, welds, deposits. The mechanism proposed by Griess has the equation :
