2. Methods for Studying Dry Corrosion

2.1 Sample preparation

Laboratory studies require samples that are representative of actual industrial parts, of reasonable size, and reproducible. Pre-oxidation metrology must be carried out with great care. Surface preparation is a key step because it alters the reactivity of the metal in the samples and can thus influence the results of high-temperature oxidation.

The NF ISO 21608 and ISO 13573 standards describe procedures for preparing samples for oxidation testing under isothermal conditions [NF ISO 21608] or with exposure to thermal cycles [ISO 13573].
