In 1981, Ellis and Conover  reported a classification system for geothermal resources. This classification serves two purposes. Firstly, the system shows that most of the geothermal resources that are hot enough for economic power production are similar to most of the lower temperature geothermal resources in terms of both their fluid chemistry and their corrosiveness to carbon steel.
