5. Conclusion

CO 2 emissions and friction are inextricably linked. The report following an investigation by the German Society for Tribology, and other studies, confirm that a significant fraction of the fuels burned are intended to overcome friction internal to the vehicle, in the engine and transmission. In addition, the vehicle contributes significantly to the emission of fine dust from braking systems and tire/road contact.

Consequently, there is immense potential for reducing environmental impact by promoting tribology research, and in particular studies on lubrication, the continued development of more durable braking materials and tires, and the use of biolubricants for engines and gearboxes. For each of these transport-related research themes, avenues to be explored are proposed, some of which have already produced results....
