6.1 Migration of food packaging constituents
The main regulation governing the use of materials in contact with food is Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. It stipulates that all food-contact materials must be inert, to prevent substances being transferred to products in quantities that would harm human health or unacceptably alter the composition or properties of the food. This poses a problem for active or intelligent packaging, which is not inert by design. Lists of authorized materials have been drawn up, with maximum authorized migration rates. These rules therefore also apply to NP-containing packaging, but the maximum migration safety limits that have been determined for macro-components cannot be applied to their nano-equivalents, due to differences in their physical, chemical or biological...
