3. Bi/tricomponent fiber applications

In this section, we present a non-exhaustive list of applications and uses for special fibers.

3.1 Thermobonding

Core/sheath fibers are mainly used for thermal binding operations. This can have several functions, such as :

  • bonding fibers together for thermal consolidation to produce a nonwoven fabric;

  • join different structures together;

  • manufacture molded parts.

Generally speaking, the outer part of the fiber is made of a polymer with a lower melting point than that of the inner part. Copolymers, polyethylene or polypropylene are often used for the outer part, with melting temperatures of around 120 and 160°C...
