2.1.1 Features

Because of its anisotropy, wood can only be correctly defined by knowing the mechanical characteristics in each of the three main directions of its structure (figure 1 ): axial direction (parallel to the fibers), tangential direction (perpendicular to the fibers and parallel to the growth rings), radial direction (perpendicular to the fibers and perpendicular to the growth rings).
