1. What are the differences between danger and risk?

In everyday life, danger and risk are equivalent concepts. In reality, however, they are two different but related concepts.

1.1 Danger

Danger is a static notion of potentiality.

An intrinsic property of a chemical substance, the hazard is the set of physical and toxicological characteristics that present a potential danger.

Hazard is a chemical substance's "calling card". It is its inherent reactivity that defines and constitutes it. Hazard can be expressed in many ways:

  • modification of a physiological factor ;

  • mortality ;

  • acute toxicity ;

  • chronic toxicity ;...
