Espacenet ( http://worldwide.espacenet.com ) is the EPO's free database. It lists over 70 million patent documents from all over the world, containing information on inventions and technical developments from 1836 to the present day.
In practice: you can search published patents from many countries yourself, using the search engine provided. Numerous search fields are available: inventors, applicants, abstracts, classes, etc.
