The features common to all five mind mapping software packagesFreeMind/Freeplane, MindView, MindManager, XMind, Mindomo-are as follows.

• They all run on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

• All nodes include metadata, i.e. data about the node itself (e.g. priority markers, percentage of completion, footnotes, hyperlinks, numbering, images).

• Maps feature floating nodes, customizable branch shapes and connecting lines between nodes.

• In the advanced functions, export to word processor and slideshow is generalized. A full range of export options is available, including the ability to export as an image file, document, web page, PDF file or slideshow.
